Study Details

To ensure we maintain the highest quality of research rigour, each participant is randomly assigned to one of two groups (either the ‘exercise group’, or the ‘usual care group’).

Exercise Group

If you are randomised to the exercise group, you will be invited to participate in a free 9-month exercise intervention, involving individualised supervised exercise training for 60 minutes on two days per week.

Exercise sessions will be individually tailored by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist to suit your needs.

Exercise sessions may also be delivered remotely, as required, using telephone or internet-based technologies.

You will also be required to attend 3 testing sessions throughout the course of the 9-month exercise intervention. These testing sessions will include assessment of your bone mineral density, body composition, physical function, muscle strength, and self-reported quality of life.

Usual Care Group

Exercise Training Sessions

Exercise training sessions will be conducted at Princess Alexandra Hospital, The Bone Clinic in Brisbane, or Valere Health in Brisbane, or Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Sydney.

Sessions will begin with a warm-up and end with a cool-down at a light-to-moderate intensity. Strength-building exercises using hand weights, bands, or body weight will be undertaken, as well as aerobic training and impact loading exercises to promote bone health.

Testing Sessions

Testing sessions will be conducted at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, or University of Technology Sydney.

Sessions will involve assessment of your bone mineral density, body composition, physical function, muscle strength, and self-reported quality of life.

If you are randomised the the usual care group, you will not participate in the exercise program.

You will continue to receive usual standard care from your treating physicians and be encouraged to follow your normal exercise and lifestyle routine.

You will be provided with general physical activity guidelines from Myeloma Australia, the national body for people with multiple myeloma in Australia.

You will be asked to attend 3 testing sessions throughout the course of 9 months. After completing the final testing, you will be provided with a free prescribed exercise program and exercise advice by the study Accredited Exercise Physiologist.
